site.btaBulgarian Model Is Stable Enough for Eurozone Membership, Says PM Zhelyazkov

Bulgaria is ready for the euro area, and the Bulgarian model is stable enough for entry in the eurozone, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said during a GERB national meeting here on Sunday. He noted that last December, the country was on the verge of the next snap parliamentary elections. Then the GERB leader made a concession in the name of a government that would start working, solve problems and set ambitious goals, Zhelyazkov added.

In his words, the Government has taken on all the legacy commitments of many governments back. In fact, against the background of success, it is easiest to highlight failure. What greater achievement for Bulgarian society and State is there than the eurozone after 20 years of efforts, constraints, overcoming crises, elections after elections that confirm Bulgaria's European path and orientation, he asked.

"Our admission to the euro area is a recognition that Bulgarian finances and economy, the Bulgarian model, are stable enough to be part of this zone," Zhelyazkov said.   

The idea of having a single currency in the EU is to overcome barriers. This is the development of the single market, which is linked to the free movement of goods, services, capital and people, the Prime Minister also said.

"When the Government took office, I said that there should be inter-institutional cooperation. When the head of State launched the attack on the euro area, then there was no way we could not defend the political vision of this Cabinet, because that is a major political objective. This is an attack on the Cabinet that is not atypical," the Prime Minister argued, adding that there is no government that the President has not turned against. Zhelyazkov also said that there should be rules between the head of State and the Executive within the constitutionally based powers. The President's actions should not divide the nation, Zhelyazkov told the GERB members in attendance.
