site.btaCC Co-Chair Petkov: We Will Take No Action that May Jeopardize Euro Adoption until July 9

Continue the Change (CC) Co-Chair Kiril Petkov said in Parliament on Friday that his party will not take any action until July 9 that might jeopardize Bulgaria's entering the euro area.

Petkov stated: "After July 9, the risk [of not joining] the euro area is zero. This is an irreversible process that cannot be stopped in any way." He added that while CC favours having Bulgaria adopt the single European currency, the fact that the biggest scourge in Bulgaria is corruption should not be forgotten. Petkov alleged that GERB leader Boyko Borissov is trying to use the topic of Bulgaria joining the eurozone to divert attention from GERB's corrupt schemes. The CC Co-Chair added: "When he [Borissov] is referring to Operation Barbarossa, I have no idea what that is, but I do know what Operation Taki [nickname of businessman Hristoforos Amanatidis] is, under which BGN 3 billion of our funds will be given to a construction company that belongs to Taki." Petkov expressed hope that Operation Taki will not come to fruition.
