"Attempts to attack me for promulgating the Euro Act [The Introduction of Euro into the Republic of Bulgaria Act] are a very weak and blatant manipulation, as the Act contains absolutely no dates – only conditions and procedures", President Rumen Radev told reporters on Thursday in the town of Belogradchik, where he took part in a commemoration ceremony of the 175th anniversary of the uprising against Ottoman rule in Northwestern Bulgaria.
"Who, a year ago, could have known that the government would request an extraordinary convergence report without conducting any real public awareness campaign, without carrying out a genuine risk assessment, without any measures, readiness from institutions, procedures, or financial buffers?" Radev added.
"Today we are honouring the Belogradchik Uprising – a revolt against lawlessness," the President said. In his words, it is disheartening that 175 years later, Bulgarians still suffer from the same injustices, with the government refusing to listen to the people's voice and being afraid to consult them.
"Attempts by [GERB leader Boyko] Borissov, [MRF – New Beginning leader Delyan] Peevski, and their government to shift the focus, to persuade us that inflation is below the required threshold, and to present the euro adoption process as one in which the people have no say, no voice, this is demonstrative arrogance. They should be aware of the consequences of their behaviour," Radev concluded.
