St Cyril and St Methodius Primary School in Nikolaevo celebrated its 145th anniversary on Sunday. Among the guests of the event were Education and Science Minister Krasimir Valchev and National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova.

In his speech, Valchev said: "The work of St Cyril and St Methodius is our greatest civilizational contribution to the world, it is the foundation of Bulgarian spirituality." He attended the marking of the school's 145th anniversary.

"Just nine days ago, we celebrated 1,160 years since the conversion of Bulgaria [to Christianity] - that other work of King Boris, who made us part of the Christian civilization," Valchev recalled. And noted that, along with the alphabet, is  Bulgaria's civilization mark in Europe, he added.

The Minister congratulated the staff of the school for what they do and for educating children to be good. "I bow to all the former teachers who have given their lives, their energy, for the children to have their educational life skills, to become good people and fulfil themselves, for you to have such distinguished fellow citizens," he said. He wish all the serving teachers health and strength "to carry out this most important mission we have entrusted to you as a country and as a society - to make children knowledgeable, capable and good people."

"In recent days, we have been talking a lot about the euro area, but once we become members of the euro area, we will be united precisely by the goal that we and our children live in a harmonious society," he argued. "For both of these things we rely most on teachers, because if we have good, motivated and supported teachers, they will make children more knowledgeable, more capable and better and we will live in a better society," he stressed.

In her speech, the National Assembly Chair said: "For a school, 45 years is a small number, but 145 years is a respectable time, as there are not many schools in Bulgaria at this venerable age. I wish the pupils to achieve everything they have wished for and what they did not think they could achieve."

Kiselova wished the teachers to be patient, because in the years she has gotten to know the team, she has seen how much patience is sometimes required. May they still be creative, dedicated, and have strong nerves, she added. The Kiselova wished that the school will continue to be "a centre of the desire that together we can always make a difference not only in the school, not only in the municipality and the city, but in the whole country."
