In recent years and especially with the arrival of the current administration, Lovech has begun to establish serious international contacts, Lovech Mayor Stratsimir Petkov said during a local conference held here on Monday. The event was part of BTA’s Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project.
He pointed out that the ambassadors of Germany and France were guests of Lovech at the opening of the first Twin Towns Festival in 2024, which may grow into a Twin Towns and Friends Festival. He also noted that Lovech and the town of Kolasin from Montenegro are twin towns and that there is an honorary consulate of Montenegro here.
"Lovech is definitely in the international dialogue and my efforts in this direction are already visible," Petkov emphasized, adding that they also have contacts with the town of Suceava Bukovina in Romania. "Every municipality must make its efforts for this international integration and for the knowledge that should inform the European partners about who has what traditions, history and culture. This knowledge between us will give us a more genuine unification," he stressed.
The mayor also pointed out that Lovech is a literary and educational centre with traditions rooted in the reign of Ivan Alexander of Bulgaria, who was an exceptional builder and writer. Lovech is also one of the towns with the most professors in Bulgaria, Petkov added.
BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project aims to raise public awareness and foster open dialogue about cohesion policy, local achievements, and the implementation of the EU's policy priorities. The project kicked off with a conference in Veliki Preslav in November 2024. The schedule of conferences until the end of September 2025 includes events in the following cities: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Gabrovo, Dobrich, Kazanlak, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Pleven, Razgrad, Ruse, Samokov, Svishtov, Sliven, Smolyan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Troyan, Targovishte, Haskovo, Shumen, and Yambol. Cross-border conferences will be held in Belgrade, Bosilegrad, Bucharest, Edirne, Skopje, and Thessaloniki. The project builds on the Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future and Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future projects, implemented by BTA in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
