site.btaPatriarch Daniil Marks 1,160 Years since Christianization of Bulgaria, 1,170 Years since Creation of Bulgarian Alphabet

On the occasion of 1160 years since the baptism of the Bulgarian people and 1170 years since the creation of the Bulgarian alphabet and Slavic literature, Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Secretary General of the Holy Synod read a patriarchal and synodal message at the conciliar holy liturgy in the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral in Varna. “The independent Orthodox Church, our alphabet and writing, spirituality, literature and rich culture preserve us to this day as a people with our own face before the world and with our proven and universally recognized contribution to the European and world spiritual and cultural treasury,” said Bishop Gerasim.
“On the second day of May, we celebrate the memory of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Bulgarian Prince Boris I Michael the Baptist. With his name and his colossal work, in both scale and significance, we associate the most important spiritual, cultural and civilizational choice that our people have made throughout their thousand-year history, full of vicissitudes,” the message states.
Bishop Gerasim recalled that the Varna and Veliki Preslav diocese is hosting a series of festive events with which the Holy Orthodox Church, together with the scientific community, marks the anniversaries.
The liturgy was led by the Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil, assisted by members of the Holy Synod and Varna priests.
The liturgy was also attended by university rectors, politicians, and public figures.
