Bulgarians residing in West and South Romania gathered at the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art in Tulcea on April 26, where diverse costumes, customs and traditions preserved by the Bulgarian communities in Romania were presented, the organizers told BTA.
A national conference entitled “Under the sign of diversity: Bulgarian communities in Romania, between heritage and cultural awakening” was organized by the Union of Banat Bulgarians in Romania and the Gavrila Simion Institute in Tulcea, in cooperation with Tulcea Mayor Stefan Ilie.
The event started with the laying of wreaths and flowers at the monument of Georgi Rakovski, which was renovated by the municipality of Tulcea in the autumn of 2024. At the time, the Bulgarian Embassy in Romania launched an initiative to erect a new monument to Stefan Karadzha, another Bulgarian hero, in the central park of the city.
Bulgarian Ambassador to Romania Radko Vlaykov who also attended the event reported: "The Mayor and I reached an agreement, and within a few months, a decision will be taken to build a Stefan Karadzha bust, as he is very much connected to Tulcea. He lived here for eight years and is one of those Bulgarians who contribute to the good name of Bulgaria."
