Protesters in Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv called for the resignation of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov on Wednesday. The rallies were organized by Justice for Everyone and Students Against the Mafia, with demonstrators in Sofia gathering outside the Palace of Justice before marching to the Supreme Judicial Council.
Lawyer Emil Georgiev of Justice for Everyone said the Constitutional Court refused to consider Sarafov’s opinions in constitutional cases, which means it regarded him as lacking legitimacy. Georgiev added that Sarafov’s continued holding of the post amounted to a clear violation of the law. He said the organizers would insist that an agenda item concerning Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov be included at the year’s first plenary session of the Supreme Judicial Council on Thursday. The protest in Sofia concluded with a march to the Supreme Judicial Council building.
Citizens in Varna (on the Black Sea) also held a silent protest outside the Palace of Justice in the city. Their main demand was the resignation of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. Only one of those present held a placard reading “Lock up Sarafov.” Deputy Mayor Pavel Popov was among those in the square.
Protesters outside the Prosecutor's Office in Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria) also called for Sarafov to be removed from office. “We oppose the control that the oligarchy exerts over the judiciary,” Students Against the Mafia’s Plovdiv coordinator Stoyan Stefanov told BTA. The protest was held under the slogan “We are not props in the prosecutors' show."
