site.btaPresident, Grand Mufti Discuss Children Being Taught Universal Virtues Regardless of Religion

President Iliana Iotova met with the newly elected Grand Mufti in Bulgaria, Ahmed Hasanov. The conversation focused on educating young people, regardless of their religion, in universal human virtues, the head of State's press secretariat reported Friday.

Iotova congratulated Hasanov on his election and wished him success in consolidating the interfaith understanding achieved over the centuries in Bulgaria. “We must talk to young people and tell them about our history of coexistence, explaining peace within the broader context of the formation of our shared values,” the President said. According to her, it is precisely this interfaith understanding in Bulgaria that prevents radical views from taking root in society, and all institutions must work together toward this mission. 

“Over the years, we have established a tradition of peace and tolerance among religious communities in Bulgaria, which can only serve as an example to other countries in Europe. We must make a joint effort to preserve and promote this model of mutual respect, because this is not only in the national interest but also benefits all citizens,” Iotova stated.  

The sides also discussed the work of the Higher Islamic Institute in Sofia, which has not yet been accredited but already has its own building, thanks to State support. The President and the Grand Mufti agreed that training qualified personnel contributes to the promotion of the religion’s traditional values in society. 

The Grand Mufti expressed his gratitude for the productive meeting with the head of State and expressed his readiness to maintain dialogue with all institutions. As an example of respect for the traditions and customs of Bulgarian citizens of the Muslim faith, Hasanov cited the traditional iftar dinner, which is hosted by the President every year.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of the Office of the Grand Mufti, Dzhelal Faik. 

On June 21, a National Muslim Conference in Sofia elected Ahmed Hasanov Grand Mufti and Mustafa Hadzhi Chairman of the Supreme Muslim Council. Until now, Hasanov served as Deputy Grand Mufti, while Hadzhi was Grand Mufti.
