On International Workers Day, Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) President Plamen Dimitrov said: "Once upon a time, the struggle was for an 8-hour workday. Today, sometimes it still is. The aspiration was for higher wages. Today, it still is. We have had to convince powerholders and employers for years that labour should get us out of the poverty trap, not leave us there. That income should provide a decent existence, and the minimum wage should be equal to the living wage, which covers basic needs. And we are far from it".
Dimitrov's greetings on the holiday were published on the CITUB website.
"In Bulgaria, the minimum wage is still only 56.5% of the living wage. We insist that it be brought up to par with it, and that our country fully adopts the Directive on adequate minimum wages and the promotion of collective bargaining. We also insist that the voice of public sector workers, who did not receive an adequate increase in their salaries with Budget 2025, be heard," Dimitrov also pointed out.
"We stand behind everyone who air just grievances for their income, for the provision of safe working conditions. Behind everyone who is ready to defend their rights!", he added.
"Happy holiday to all who contribute by their daily work, by their knowledge, skills, efforts and time, to the advancement of society and the well-being of their families," said the CITUB President.
