The Education Ministry is determined to change the curricula and increase classes in both mathematics and science, said Education Deputy Minister Nikolay Vitanov in connection with proposed changes to the high school education in Dimitrovgrad.
In recent decades, there has been too much focus on foreign language education at the expense of other subjects. For example, foreign language classes outnumber Bulgarian language classes and math and science classes combined, Vitanov added. He said that there are also plans to revise curricula content to make it more practical, so that a transition is made from a culture of memorization to a culture of comprehension. "I think all parents and the community at large will welcome this idea," the Deputy Minister said.
According to him, the realistic deadline for the changes to take effects is the beginning of the school year in 2026. Here are plans to introduce a compulsory matriculation exam in mathematics within four to five years. The aim is to reduce content but more in-depth, the deputy minister said. On the subject of introducing the subject on religion in schools, he said one of the issues that needed to be resolved beforehand was the provision of teachers.
Deputy Education Minister Vitanov visited Dimitrovgrad on the occasion of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Ivan Vazov Highs School of Science and Maths. The ceremony took place at the local theatre, where there was a concert and teachers and students received awards.
