On the X social media platform, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the "fruitful conversation" the two had on Thursday "on the common goal of achieving just and lasting peace".

For his part, Zelenskyy wrote on X that he "had a meaningful conversation with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and expressed gratitude for Bulgaria’s unwavering support for Ukraine."

Later on Thursday, the Bulgarian Prime Minister will participate in the extraordinary European Council meeting in Brussels, the Government Information Service said.

The EU leaders will discuss ways to strengthen the common European defence in terms of collective capabilities, financing and strategic partnerships. In addition, the heads of State and Government will discuss ways to achieve lasting and sustainable peace and security guarantees for Ukraine.

Prior to the meeting, EU leaders will hold a discussion with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine.
