Bulgaria earned its freedom and fought for it, President Iliana Iotova said in an interview on the occasion of Bulgaria's National Day, for Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), published on the national broadcaster’s website. According to her, the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) marked the end of a historical period from which the Third Bulgarian State was reborn.

This is also the day when Bulgaria returned to the political map of the world after five centuries of Ottoman rule, Iotova said. March 3 is the date of Bulgaria’s freedom, but also a day when all Bulgarians, wherever they are, reach out to one another and look back to the events of 148 years ago, she added. “Our important task, in my view, is to pass this peace on to our children,” the President stressed, noting that Bulgaria has preserved its national identity and maintained its spiritual and intellectual strength over the years.

“There is no division among people. It seems to me that we are more united than ever,” Iotova commented, adding that attempts at division are being artificially created through politics and politicians.

Regarding tensions in the Middle East, the President assured that the Bulgarian State is prepared to protect the lives and security of Bulgarian citizens. She underscored that ensuring national security and making efforts to evacuate Bulgarians residing in the region is a key priority.

“We still do not have a concrete, clear position because it is too early,” Iotova said when asked about Bulgaria’s stance on developments in the Middle East, describing the situation as highly delicate. She cautioned against using the issue for domestic political purposes, referring to this country’s election campaign.

The President also said that the most important task ahead is the proper organization of the upcoming elections and tackling electoral abuses, highlighting vote-buying as a major problem. According to her, society needs to restore trust in state institutions.

Iotova reiterated her proposal to establish an association of Bulgarian communities abroad that would also have representation in Bulgaria. “There is no ‘us’ and ‘you’ - we are all Bulgarians,” she said in response to a question about amendments to the Election Code.
