On Thursday, MPs debated a bill on the early termination of the parliamentary ad-hoc Committee to establish facts and circumstances regarding the activities of George Soros and Alexander Soros and their Foundations on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, financing Bulgarian natural and legal persons and non-governmental organizations, as well as to establish their links with political parties, magistrates, educational institutions, media, business structures, and state authorities. No vote was taken due to the exhaustion of the plenary time.
The draft was submitted by the GERB Chair Boyko Borissov and a group of MPs, who argued that this temporary commission goes beyond the competence of the National Assembly, as MPs have no legal basis to investigate private individuals or foundations. Parliament is not an investigative body, the explanatory memorandum further stated.
The sponsors also said that the suspension of the temporary commission's activities will be a step towards restoring public trust and reducing polarization in Bulgarian society.
The commission was established by a decision of the National Assembly on November 5, 2025, but no chairperson was elected. Its first meeting was scheduled for December 2, 2025, but did not take place due to lack of quorum.
MRF - New Beginning Deputy Floor Leader Jordan Tzonev expressed disagreement with the motives behind the bill and reported that his party would vote against it. He specified that the commission's goal is to investigate a network of influence, not civil society. He added: "The network also affects educational programmes for our children, which have nothing to do with our values. Thanks to [US President Donald] Trump and his team, Soros's network began to be exposed in its infancy, its financing, and the influence it has had in various parts of the world. That is why I disagree with the sponsors' motives. This is something that is destroying Bulgarian democracy."
Tzonev condemned George Soros for laying the foundations of the Open Society Institute – Sofia after having met with Andrei Lukanov, prime minister of Bulgaria in 1990. According to MRF - New Beginning Deputy Floor Leader, the coalition Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria is the latest proxy to be established as a result.
