site.btaUPDATED MRF - New Beginning Leader Peevski Calls for Sofia Mayor's Resignation over Waste Crisis
The leader of MRF - New Beginning, Delyan Peevski, has called for the resignation of Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, the party’s press centre said.
For months, Bulgaria’s capital has been sinking into garbage and filth, Peevski said.
“Who ordered this outrage? The answer is very simple – the Mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev,” Peevski said, as quoted in the statement.
“Mayor, Sofia is facing a waste crisis. There is only one way out of this failure – immediate resignation,” Peevski added.
Later in the day, MRF - New Beginning said it had sent a tipoff to the Ministers of Environment and Health, and the heads of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water and the Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate. They say there: "It is fully within the competence of the institutions you head to take action: strict sanctions, declaring a state of emergency and mobilizing the organizational resources of the State to address the environmental catastrophe and an impending health crisis."
Commenting on the waste problem in the capital late last week, Vasil Terziev said he has a responsibility to provide a service at an affordable price. “I will solve this problem, no matter how much my critics and opponents may doubt it,” he said.
Several boroughs of Bulgaria's capital have been experiencing waste collection issues since October 2025. The crisis began in the boroughs of Lyulin and Krasno Selo after Sofia City Hall refused to sign new waste collection contracts over inflated prices. At the time, Mayor Terziev said that Sofia Municipality would not pay a protection racket fee and would not yield to “mafia practices”. In early December, Izgrev, Poduyane, and Slatina joined the list of boroughs with disrupted waste collection. A temporary collection system has been in force since. During the first days of 2026, citizens reported difficulties with waste collection in several areas, including the Lyulin, Poduyane, and Slatina boroughs. City Hall representatives said the backlog in collection in critical areas of Sofia will be cleared.
