Caretaker Minister of Economy and Industry Irina Shtonova met with representatives of the crop production sector here on Thursday. ”The three words we heard today were fuel, energy, and liquidity,” Shtonova said following the meeting.

She noted that Bulgaria has always taken pride in its agricultural products and that, although the sector’s share in the economy has declined over the years, it remains of key importance.

Discussions on support measures for both the crop production sector and the transport sector began as soon as the developments in Iran unfolded, Shtonova added.

She said that payments to farmers are being advanced and part of the fuel excise tax is being refunded. The minister also pointed to measures in the transport sector - which is key for farmers - including a notification for EUR 50 million in support and a postponement of the planned toll increase.

Shtonova noted that a similar meeting had been held a week earlier with representatives of the transport sector, where, as on Thursday, the issue of liquidity was repeatedly raised. She added that three of the measures introduced for transport would also be applied to agriculture.

The first involves deferring lease payments for agricultural equipment, meaning that until the end of the year, farmers will pay only 5% to 10% of the usual amount instead of full payments.

She also announced recent developments regarding electricity support. State aid has been approved for energy-intensive enterprises, which will be eligible for assistance if market prices exceed EUR 63 per megawatt-hour. She noted that fertilizer producers fall into this category.

The minister added that for all non-household customers, including agricultural producers, the State will provide 50% compensation if electricity prices exceed EUR 122 per megawatt-hour, with the aim of ensuring greater predictability for businesses.
