The situation caused by heavy rains and floods in Blagoevgrad Region has been brought under control, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said during GERB's National Youth Academy in Razlog on Saturday. "There is no longer a concern," he added.
The Prime Minister noted that the mayors of Sandanski and Petrich are working actively on the ground with the regional governor. The natural flow of the Struma River is also being monitored to ensure there is no overflow affecting Greece.
Zhelyazkov highlighted the importance of prevention and the response of institutions in handling natural disasters, specifically praising the rapid response of Irrigation Systems in Blagoevgrad.
He said that the newly established National Water Board will have a team that will work on cleaning riverbeds ahead of next year. The Prime Minister added that this is a joint commitment of the State and municipalities, noting that everything in terms of organization and funding will be taken care of.
On November 27, a state of emergency was declared in four municipalities in the Blagoevgrad region - Petrich, Sandanski, Simitli, and Strumyani - due to the heavy rains.
