Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu remains under judicial supervision after the District 1 Court in Bucharest rejected his appeal against the prosecutor service's decision to extend this preventive measure, local media reported.

On Thursday, Georgescu appeared in court, where he spoke publicly about his case for the first time since criminal proceedings began.

He described the case as “blatant political harassment”. “Justice must be done in the courtroom, not on television. Freedom of expression defines a true democracy,” Georgescu added.

Georgescu, who surprisingly won the first round of the presidential election last November, is under criminal investigation for six offences, the most serious being incitement to acts against the constitutional order. He is accused of planning to destabilize Romania through the support of mercenary forces allegedly led by Horatiu Potra, following the annulment of the first round of the elections by the Constitutional Court in December 2024.
