The Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) said here on Friday that it has sent close to 33 tonnes of additional humanitarian aid to those affected by the catastrophic February 6 earthquake in Syria. The cargo airplane left Sofia Airport for Beirut. It is transporting donations by Bulgarian citizens and companies, including new clothes, shoes, toiletries, food with a long shelf life, etc., which were collected as part of the national campaign to help those affected by the earthquake.

The cargo will be unloaded in Beirut by representatives of the Lebanese Red Cross and transported to Syria by a humanitarian convoy. The BRC's humanitarian aid will then be received by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which will provide it to those in need.

So far, the BRC has donated supplies from its disaster relief reserve worth close to EUR 310,000 to Turkiye and Syria. A total of BGN 1,810,000 have been transferred to the two countries from the fundraising campaign.

BRC's leadership received a letter from the head of the Turkish Red Crescent, Kerem Kinik, in which he expresses gratitude for the assistance provided after the devastating earthquake, which affected millions and is described as one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 21st century. Kinik extended his and the Turkish Red Crescent's deepest gratitude for the BRC's support and solidarity.
