Labour and Social Policy Minister Borislav Gutsanov announced Wednesday that he has signed a proposal to increase maternity allowances for the second year of childcare leave from BGN 780 to BGN 1,100. He made his statement during a visit to the Nadezhda nursing home in Sofia, on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons.
Gutsanov explained that if a mother decides to return to work during the second year of maternity leave, she should receive 75% of the allowance rather than the current 50%. According to him, this measure would encourage women to re-enter the workforce earlier, which in turn would support economic growth. “Personally, I very much hope that next year will be the year of young families,” the minister added.
He also said that another proposal under consideration is to increase the child allowances for first, second, and third children. Additionally, the Labour Ministry intends to extend school student financial support so that it covers not only grades 1-4 and grade 8, but all pupils from grades 1 through 8. “The aim is to ensure that every child benefit from this support,” Gutsanov explained.
On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, the minister emphasized that older people remain a priority group for his ministry.
