Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov condemned the unprovoked violation of airspace during his visit to the town of Simitli on Thursday, referring to the entry of Russian drones into Polish airspace on the night of September 9-10. “Our position is clear and aligned with that of our allies. We express the Alliance’s determination to take all necessary measures foreseen by the treaty,” he said.

Zhelyazkov described the incident as an unnecessary provocation. “This does nothing to ease tensions between Russia and European Union states. It strengthens the arguments around which the Coalition of the Willing unites – that Europe needs robust security guarantees to ensure the Union has the defensive readiness and capability to repel any attempts at aggression or provocation,” he added.

At present, there are no indications that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty will be invoked, Zhelyazkov emphasized.

The Prime Minister was in Simitli for the official opening of a renovated kindergarten. He also visited the refurbished Sts Cyril and Methodius School in the village of Krupnik.
