Commenting on an assault against Senior Commissioner Nikolay Kozhuharov, the police chief in the city of Ruse, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov told journalists on Friday such aggressive behavior reflected the irresponsible attitude of parties and politicians, who systematically undermine public trust in the institutions. Brazen and arrogant conduct towards a police officer is an echo of the behaviour of such people, Mitov said, commenting on the brutal attack on Kozhuharov on Wednesday night after a confrontation with a group of men over alleged reckless driving on their part.

Mitov said the police chief was with his family at the time of the attack.

All details will be clarified in the course of the pre-trial proceedings. The results of alcohol and drug tests taken from the four young men involved are pending, the Interior Minister said.

The incident was widely condemned by Bulgarian politicians.
