More than 150 people are taking part in efforts to contain the wildfire burning above the village of Ploski, near Sandanski, the head of the Strumyani State Forestry Enterprise, Ivan Rizov, told BTA Wednesday. Firefighters, forestry workers, military personnel, volunteers, and staff from Pirin National Park are involved in the firefighting operation.

According to Rizov, no additional personnel are needed at this time, but more help will likely be required in the coming days.

There are two active fire fronts in Sandanski Municipality: one within Pirin National Park, and the other at a lower elevation above Ploski. The fire poses no threat to nearby villages, as it remains far from residential areas.

Efforts today are focused on the fire above Ploski. Rizov said the two helicopters used Tuesday in the efforts to suppress the fire, made a significant impact, and aerial support is also expected Wednesday.

The fire that has expanded into Pirin National Park, has affected about 1,000 ha.

On Tuesday, intense crown fires in the Ilindentsi area forced firefighting crews to temporarily evacuate for safety.

Within the Strumyani Forestry Enterprise, the situation is currently under control, with no active fronts and only internal smoldering areas being monitored and treated.
