At an international conference titled “Bulgarian Crafts – Traditions Meet the Future,” Edyta Demby-Siwek, Deputy Executive Director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), emphasized Bulgaria’s notable products protected by geographical indications. She cited Bulgarian yogurt as a prime example, underscoring that preserving such traditions extends well beyond national borders.

During her speech, Demby-Siwek highlighted the new EU regulation concerning geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products. She explained that the regulation aims to support regional economies by creating jobs and fostering economic growth. “This is also a great opportunity for culture,” she noted, praising Bulgaria as an excellent example with its famous Troyan pottery, Chiprovtsi carpets, and the Etar Regional Ethnographic Open-Air Museum.

“Our mission is to assist small entrepreneurs in protecting their intellectual property,” Demby-Siwek stressed, adding that the goal is to enable more producers to safeguard their local brands.

The new regulation is designed to protect the names of artisanal and industrial products from counterfeiting and to help consumers easily identify authentic products. Demby-Siwek pointed out Bulgaria’s strong tradition in crafts and stated that the new system presents an outstanding opportunity for the country. Geographical indications not only guarantee product quality but also help preserve traditional know-how.

She further highlighted the significant economic impact of geographical indications in agriculture, which already generate EUR 75 billion annually across the EU in food and beverage sectors. According to her, Bulgaria is well-positioned to become a leader in this process due to its crafts, talents, public interest, and institutional support.

The forum was organized by the Bulgarian Patent Office in partnership with the European Commission and EUIPO.
