The Municipality of Kyustendil will begin reconstruction of a trail leading to Polska Skakavitsa Waterfall. The Municipality will start the restoration of bridges and stairs in March so that they are safe and attractive for visitors, said Kristian Ivanchov, Deputy Mayor of Kyustendil, on Monday.

Every day dozens of nature lovers and tourists visit Polska Skakavitsa Waterfall, the third highest waterfall in Bulgaria. The trail was built years ago under the programme for cross-border cooperation with the Republic of North Macedonia. The trail was built without the use of concrete, using wood instead for the construction of bridges and stairs.

The project was worth EUR 412,000, but now, years after its implementation, the trail is almost non-existent, said Emil Dimitrov, Mayor of the village of Polska Skakavitsa. "There are tourists, but there is no trail anymore," he said.

According to tourists, in addition to the need for maintenance, more information about the trail is also needed to promote the area. Apart from the beauty of the waterfall, there are more than 700 species of butterflies, 19 species of fish and hundreds of plant species unique to the area. It is also the only place where five species of swallows are found.
