North Macedonia's Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski, who is on a working visit to the US, has met briefly in New York with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz within the context of the marking of 50 years of Germany's UN membership, and with World Economic Forum Managing Director Mirek Dusek, the government press service in Skopje said.

Scholz stressed that Germany expects North Macedonia to join the EU because European integration is the best and only alternative for the country, and that the decision to amend its Constitution, which is yet to be made, is the only chance to ensure its citizens a quality of life according to European standards and to achieve EU membership by 2030.

Otherwise the Republic of North Macedonia and its citizens are certain to face isolation in the long run, which is not in the interest of that country, the region and Europe, the press release said.

Kovachevski and Dusek discussed the economic prospects of North Macedonia and the countries of the Western Balkans. Through active cooperation with over 800 leading companies, the World Economic Forum can contribute significantly to attracting the investors' attention to the Western Balkans.

On the path of European integration, which Skopje considers achievable by 2030, North Macedonia needs innovation and a boost to the competitiveness of companies, investments and motivation of human capital. The exchange of experience and knowledge at the forum in global format is valuable on important matters such as business solutions for sustainable development, especially in food production, finding solutions about the energy potential, climate change, healthy conditions, global competition, information technology and the fight against corruption, Kovachevski was quoted as saying in the press release.

It was noted at the meeting that the Republic of North Macedonia's economic performance is improving.
