site.btaDavid Gimenez Carreras to Conduct Zarzuela Night in Varna

Spanish conductor David Gimenez Carreras, who is the nephew of tenor Jose Carreras, will conduct a Zarzuela Night concert on August 9 at the Summer Theatre of Varna, the Opera in the city announced. The program will offer zarzuela and classic Spanish romances performed by soloists Ilina Mihaylova, Reinaldo Droz and Deyan Vachkov with the Varna Opera Orchestra.

Maestro Carreras thinks that because of the similarity in the temperament of the Bulgarians and the Spaniards the repertoire will strongly appeal to the Varna audience.

Carreras has long known the Varna singers Ilina Mihaylova and Reynaldo Droz, with whom they have performed several concerts and operas. He finds them fantastic, with beautiful voices and exciting stage presence. He said that he has always felt great around Bulgarian musicians who play with passion, have a great technique and always strive to give their best. The maestro has previously conducted the orchestras of the Sofia Opera, the Sofia Philharmonic and the Ruse Philharmonic.

He was born into a musical family, with a pianist mother and a singer uncle, who have been a strong influence on him. He specialized in Vienna with Carl Osterhayer and in London with Sir Colin Davis. He has worked with the Vienna, Munich and London Philharmonics, the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestra di Scala di Milano. He said that he and his famous relative Jose Carreras are always a pleasure to work with, being professionals on stage and enjoying the situations they find themselves in together off stage, as a family.
