The centre-right New Democracy will have an absolute majority in the next Greek parliament, interim results after counting votes in almost all polling stations after Sunday's parliamentary elections showed.

With 97.7 % of the votes counted, New Democracy gets 40.56 %, giving it 158 seats in the 300-member Greek Parliament. This was made possible because of the electoral system applied, which gives extra seats to the first force in the elections.

Under Greek rules for a second election, the biggest party is awarded a bonus of between 20 and 50 seats. With more than 40% of the vote, New Democracy won all 50.

The left-wing SYRIZA came second, as it continues to lose support and so far has won only 17.83 % or 47 seats. The only regional unit where it comes first, as in the previous elections, is Rhodope in Northern Greece.

Third is the centre-left PASOK movement with 11.86 % and 32 seats.

The Greek Communist Party, which is backed by 7.67 %, will have 20 deputies.

Next come two far right parties, almost neck and neck. The Spartans, supported by jailed functionary of banned Golden Dawn, Ilias Kasidiaris, got 4.68% and 13 MPs, while nationalist Greek Solution has the support of 4.45% bringing 12 seats.

These are followed by the ultra-conservative Niki (Victory) with 3.7% and 10 MPs.

The last party to enter the Greek parliament is the left Euro-sceptic Freedom Sailing, with 3.17% and 8 seats.

The other parties remaining below the 3% threshold collectively get 6.07%.

In a televised address the evening after his election victory, New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he would be prime minister of all Greeks.
