Placido Domingo will perform a concert with popular arias from beloved operas on September 11 at Arena Sofia. "Bulgaria, I am very happy that we will be together again," the tenor wrote on his official page.
The 82-year-old singer, nicknamed "the king of opera", is on a world tour that includes Sofia. His team says the maestro is preparing a special surprise for his visit this year. In 2014, the tenor brought the audience to its feet with a performance of Emil Dimitrov's "My Country, My Bulgaria".
Music critics say this will be the last major tour for the celebrity performer.
According to the organisers, besides traditional countries like Spain and Germany, where he often sings, Domingo this time included countries like Uzbekistan and Turkiye. On stage, he performs with local orchestras and invites young operatic talents as his partners, some of whom are finalists of the Opera Italia competition, considered the most prestigious in the world, where Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva started her career, the organisers pointed out.
Two new stars, Jennifer Rowley and Cristina Ramos, will perform in Sofia arias and duets from Verdi and Puccini operas.
This is Placido Domingo's third visit to Bulgaria. The first one was again in Arena Sofia in 2014. In 2021 he sang under the open sky at the invitation of Sonya Yoncheva. The concert in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral gathered over 5,000 spectators on the square and was watched by over 60,000 viewers via streaming worldwide.
By the end of the year, the concert will be shown on one of the world's major classical music television networks.
This week, Placido Domingo will again share the stage with the Bulgarian soprano in a special gala dedicated to conductor Daniel Barenboim at the Salzburg Festival. It will also feature Cecilia Bartoli, conductor Zubin Mehta and other stars of the opera scene.
