Deputy PM Kuneva Wants to See
Judiciary Showing More
Responsibility

Sofia, December 12 (BTA) - Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva
wants to see the judiciary showing more responsibility. "What I
want to see is more responsibility on the part of the judicial
system. I want them to acknowledge their responsibility and show
leadership," Kuneva told BTA in a video interview.

"A State needs people who can take responsibility and if we
don't have this, no plans and strategies can substitute the
absence of responsibility," she said. She argued that somebody
should recognize the problem as his or her problem and make a
commitment to address it, "regardless of whether this is about
Bulgaria's accession to the EU, the implementation of a project
or about an issue such as the judicial reform".

Kuneva mentioned Romania, which has been paired up with Bulgaria
in the European Commission monitoring of the progress in
fighting organized crime and corruption, and reforming the
judiciary ever since the two joined the EU in 2007, and said
that things in Romania started to look well the moment Justice
Minister Monica Macavei appeared. "It was then that Romania
started changing," she added.

Kuneva makes no secret of her worry that an update of the
judicial reform strategy which Justice Minister Hristo Ivanov is
trying to push through, is too slow making its way through the
government and into the legislature. "I have hoped that it will
happen faster, before the end of this parliamentary session. My
fear is that the year will be over and Parliament will be unable
to adopt the strategy update before its Christmas recess," the
Deputy Prime Minister said. VI/LN/
