Residential buildings and commercial properties were evacuated on Wednesday in the port city of Piraeus, part of the urban agglomeration of Athens, due to a detected gas leak from a petrol station, Greek public television ERT reported.

The measure is preventive, with firefighters and specialized teams sent to the scene. Greek police have cordoned off the area around the gas station, temporarily halting the nearby Piraeus metro station, and one of the city's tram lines.

No injuries were reported. The causes of the incident are being investigated.
