Valeri Simeonov Receives Armenia's Medal of Honour

Sofia, May 26 (BTA) - Bulgarian politician Valeri Simeonov received Armenia's Medal of Honour, the highest distinction awarded for extraordinary service to that country, the press office of the National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB) said. Simeonov leads the NFSB and co-chairs the Patriotic Front, which is represented in the Bulgarian Parliament.

The medal was presented to him in the Armenian capital Yerevan by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Ermine Nagdalyan. Simeonov is the first Bulgarian politician to receive such a high honour from the new Armenian legislature.

Simeonov and Patriotic Front MPs Valentin Kassabov, Hristian Mitev and Dimiter Bairaktarov were paying a two-day visit to Armenia.

Nagdalyan thanked the Bulgarian National Assembly for adopting a declaration which recognized the mass killing of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1918. She noted the role of Simeonov and his NFSB in establishing April 24 as a day of remembrance in Bulgaria for the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

The NFSB delegation visited the Peyo Yavorov School in Yerevan for observances of the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slav Letters (May 24) and the school's 50th anniversary.

On Wednesday, the Bulgarian delegation travelled to Nagorno-Karabakh, where they talked with President Bako Sahakyan and National Assembly Speaker Ashot Gulyan. The guests were updated on the current situation in the region after the armed conflict there was rekindled in early April.
