Democratic Bulgaria (DB) submitted a draft declaration seeking urgent measures to improve road safety and infrastructure, the party's press service said on Friday. DB wants the National Assembly to vote on the document when MPs return at the end of August.
The declaration would commit the National Assembly to seek broad agreement and secure funding for improving road safety and infrastructure as part of the implementation of the 2026 State Budget and preparations for the 2027 budget. DB wants the declaration put to a vote during the opening days of the National Assembly's new session in late August.
The declaration calls for the competent authorities to audit all tender procedures for public road safety contracts over the past 10 years; commission a technical inspection of road restraint systems installed along motorways during that period; provide information on all procedures conducted by the Road Infrastructure Agency for replacing or repairing such systems; and for the Bulgarian Government, particularly the State Agency for Road Safety, to submit a three-year road safety action plan for 2027-2029.
The draft proposes that the National Assembly task the Committee on Regional Policy, Public Works and Local Self-Government, with representatives of all parliamentary groups taking part, to work with the executive authorities on measures to improve road safety.
Since the beginning of 2026, an average of one Bulgarian has died and more than 20 people have been injured on the country's roads each day. Corrupt practices, improper influence and inefficient spending of public funds on projects to improve road safety and infrastructure are unacceptable, DB said, adding that politicians' commitment to effective road safety measures must transcend party divisions.
Road infrastructure, the condition of crash barriers and road safety were the focus of a roundtable on Tuesday involving representatives of the executive, legislature and non-governmental sector. DB organized the event at the National Assembly.
