site.btaWizz Air Launches Regular Flights from Sofia to Tirana, Berlin

Wizz Air is expanding its network from Bulgaria with new routes to Tirana and Berlin and continues to increase its presence on the Bulgarian market, reported Wizz Air Corporate Communications Manager Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale during an event organized by the carrier in Sofia on Tuesday.

According to him, flights between Sofia and Tirana will start on July 4 and will be operated three times a week - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and from September 20, the airline will also operate a new year-round route between Sofia and Berlin with four flights a week - on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Imperiale pointed out that during the summer season, Wizz Air is opening a total of 13 new routes from Sofia. The company is expanding its presence in Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece and Egypt, as part of its strategy to offer new destinations annually and to strengthen its position in Bulgaria.

Among the new year-round routes are Berlin, Palermo, Lamezia Terme and Budapest, while seasonal flights to Rhodes, Corfu and Palma de Mallorca will be operated only during the summer months.

The company representative noted that Wizz Air remains the largest airline in Bulgaria by market share and continues to invest in the country. He recalled that since June 15, the carrier has based a third Airbus A321neo aircraft in Varna (on the Black Sea), which allows the implementation of the airline's largest summer programme from the seaside city to date.

According to Imperiale, reservations from Bulgarian passengers during the current summer season are stable, and among the most sought-after destinations are those to Italy and Germany. The average occupancy of flights in the company's network is about 91%.

He also announced that from early 2027, Wizz Air will begin the phased implementation of the Starlink satellite internet service on board its aircraft. The entire fleet is expected to be equipped by the end of 2027.

When asked about the possibility of domestic flights in Bulgaria, Imperiale said that at this stage the company does not plan to enter this segment and remains focused on international routes.

Regarding the discussed changes in the European Union to include hand luggage in the price of airline tickets, he warned that such a measure could lead to higher prices for passengers, since the low-cost model is based on the ability of customers to choose the additional services they wish to pay for.
