President Iliana Iotova Monday attended an event marking 80 years since the founding of UNICEF and 20 years since the opening of UNICEF’s office in Bulgaria. "Bulgaria has been an exceptionally strong and solid partner of UNICEF for the past 20 years," she said. The event was held under Iotova's auspices at the Sts Cyril and Methodius National Library and gathered representatives of national and local authorities, the diplomatic corps, international organizations, and UNICEF partners from across civil society and the private sector.

"Our children today face numerous challenges, including aggression on a pandemic scale, addictions to gambling, drugs and phones, and poverty," Iotova said. "Our mission is to care for those who come after us - to love our children, to pass on everything we know, and to open a window to the future for them. Institutions, society, and parents must stand strong and work together on this task," she noted.

Addressing the organizers from UNICEF Bulgaria and the guests, Iotova noted that in a world filled with dangers and conflicts, the global organization "brings back the meaning of words such as hope, humanity, and justice into our daily lives." "The level of development of any society is reflected in its care for the most vulnerable – for children, for the rejected, for the poor, for those who do not have an equal start," she said.

Iotova pointed out that over the past 20 years, UNICEF, through its projects, has contributed to better living conditions for children. The organization is one of the biggest supporters of Bulgarian institutions in assisting the most vulnerable, Iotova added. She also highlighted the tireless efforts of Christina de Bruin, UNICEF’s representative in Bulgaria. “In the past five years, you have been the visible and invisible force of UNICEF in our country,” the head of State said, addressing de Bruin, whose mandate in Bulgaria is soon coming to an end.
