Over 7,800 tablets and more than six kilograms of powdered substances were found by customs officers of the Sofia Customs Territorial Directorate in the luggage of passengers arriving from India, the Customs Agency reported on Wednesday.
At around 9:00 a.m. on April 16, customs officers at the Sofia Airport stopped two Indian citizens arriving in Bulgaria from India on a transit flight from Turkiye for inspection. Both stated that they had nothing to declare, but after an X-ray inspection of their luggage, similar items were found in their suitcases. During the thorough customs inspection of their checked luggage, 42 types of various medicines, medical, herbal and other products in the form of tablets, syrups, powders, gels, seeds, and teas were found. A total of 7,840 tablets in blisters and bottles were seized, as well as over six kilograms of powdery substances in bottles and packages. The passengers stated that they were carrying the goods for their friends and did not know that they had to declare them.
The fine provided for in the Customs Act for this violation - transporting or attempting to transport goods across the state border without the knowledge and permission of the customs authorities - is from 100 to 200% of the customs value of the goods.
