As of April 7, there were a total of 94 cases of measles in Bulgaria, with 14 new cases reported, according to the Ministry of Health’s website. Of the newly reported cases, 10 are from Vratsa Region, two from Sofia City, and one each from the Pleven and Lovech regions. The newly infected individuals are aged between two and 53, according to the Health Ministry’s website.
In Bulgaria, measles vaccination is mandatory and must be administered at 13 months of age and in the year the child turns 12.
Measles is an acute infectious disease characterized by general intoxication, inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, a characteristic skin rash, and frequent complications, according to the website of the Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate. The measles virus is transmitted through the air via talking, exhaling, sneezing, coughing, and crying. Infection occurs through direct contact with an infected person - at a distance of 1-2 meters - in enclosed spaces, public transportation, and schools. The incubation period averages 12 to 14 days.
