site.btaBulgaria Will Not Allow Speculative Price Hikes Blamed on Euro, Finance Minister Says
Bulgaria will not allow speculative price increases blamed on the euro introduction, and the caretaker government and state institutions continue the efforts to protect citizens, caretaker Finance Minister Georgi Klisurski said on Monday. He was speaking during a regular briefing of the National Coordination Mechanism for Monitoring and Control of the Introduction of the Euro in the Council of Ministers building.
“As in many other eurozone countries that adopted the single currency without such increases, we in Bulgaria will not allow them either,” Klisurski said. He added that introducing the euro will lead to faster economic growth and a quicker improvement in citizens’ well-being.
Klisurski affirmed the caretaker government’s and Ministry of Finance’s firm commitment to a smooth introduction of the euro. He stressed that introducing the single currency is a long process that does not happen overnight, but gradually over many months.
Addressing representatives of the executive branch, the Minister said he expects control measures to be effective and properly implemented. “We expect inspections to continue in full force not only in quantity but also in quality. Checks and fines must be precise where there is a problem, not burdensome or unnecessary where there is none,” he said.
Klisurski announced that from next week all newly appointed ministers will join the coordination council to support control efforts, which will continue at an even higher pace.
