At a commemorative ceremony in Sofia on Thursday, marking the 153rd death anniversary of national hero and freedom fighter Vasil Levski, President Iliana Iotova said that "Levski believed in the creative power of the Bulgarian people, and I believe in it as well, because with that strength great goals can be achieved."
"First, we need to get our confidence back in ourselves and in the state. We need to believe that we can have institutions we can trust, that will take care of us, that will preach and give respect and trust," she said. In her words, this is the common cause today. "A state of law and equality. A state that is fair to all Bulgarian citizens, because today it is not a question of whose side you are on, but whether you are on the side of justice," Iotova added.
"The Bulgarian National Revival taught us that no one can forge a path alone and that we can move forward only if we are united," the President added. "With joint efforts let us think about our homeland and our people. The Bulgarian National Revival taught us strength and willpower, unity. Today, we are led to believe that everyone is on their own, that we should not trust our neighbours, be distrustful and alienated. That our national virtues, which have preserved us as a people and as a state, are outdated. To these people I will say loudly: the foundations of the Bulgarian national spirit are very strong," Iotova said, adding that nothing can break them.
"The Bulgarian people have a glorious history. They pass on their glory and greatness from generation to generation. The Bulgarian national ideal has long been defined, and we remain faithful to it. The example set by the Apostle of Freedom is an example of duty and honour," Iotova said.
"To cope on our own, to be together, to use the energy we have as a nation to move forward, this is Vasil Levski's legacy, both to those he spoke to about his great dream of freedom and to us, present-day generations," Iotova said.
According to her, Bulgarians need to believe in themselves a little more. "Let us have faith. Let us look in one direction. Let us be passionate about one cause, and then we will easily reach the high Bulgarian summits, and even surpass them," Iotova added.
"Ivan Vazov writes that he [Levski] was sent by fate to create the future. And he, the deacon, the Apostle of Freedom, turned back time so that Bulgaria could be resurrected. So that Bulgaria could rise above the centuries as a country of freedom, equality, and legality," Iotova said. In this sacred deed, in this battle, Levski was not alone, Iotova added. "Thousands of like-minded people from all corners of our homeland came to him. They just wanted to touch him. Proud and independent Bulgarians. Let us remember them today," she added.
