site.btaRenewables Account for 11.2% of Energy Used for Transport in EU, 8.1% in Bulgaria
The share of renewable energy sources (RES) in transport in the EU reached 11.2% in 2024, up by 0.2 percentage points from 2023, the statistical office of the EU (Eurostat) reported on Wednesday. When this indicator began to be monitored in 2004, the share stood at 1.4%.
The 2024 level is 17.8 percentage points below the 29% target for 2030 for the use of renewable energy in transport. Sweden recorded the highest share of RES in transport among EU Member States at 26.4%, followed by Finland with 20.3% and the Netherlands with 19.7%. The lowest shares were registered in Croatia (0.9%), Greece (3.9%) and Czechia (5.7%).
In Bulgaria, the share of renewable energy sources in transport in 2024 stood at 8.1%, according to data from Eurostat’s database.
Among the 19 EU countries that reported an increase in the use of renewable energy in transport between 2023 and 2024, Latvia recorded the highest growth (+7.4 percentage points), followed by the Netherlands (+6.2 percentage points). Sweden, which in 2023 was the only EU country not only to meet but to exceed the 29% target with a share of 33.6%, recorded the largest decline in 2024 (-7.2 percentage points). The remaining seven decreases ranged from -0.1 percentage points (Greece and Cyprus) to -0.8 percentage points (Slovenia).
