Bulgarian Economy's Energy Dependence on Imports Increases to Nearly 42% in 2024

The energy dependency in 2024 increased by 2.424 percentage points, up to 41.936% compared to the previous year, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) announced on its website. The indicator shows the extent to which a country’s economy depends on imports to meet its energy needs. On Friday, NSI published data on energy indicators: primary energy consumption and energy dependency, calculated from the overall energy balance of the country.

The energy dependency in 2023 increased by 2.61 percentage points, up to 39.72% in comparison to the previous year, NSI data shows.

The primary energy consumption for 2024 decreased by 0.69% compared to the previous year, reaching 16 553.805 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent in 2024. The indicator measures the country’s total energy needs, excluding any non-energy use of energy carriers.
