At the start of the new plenary session, MP Toma Bikov of GERB–UDF said: “For us, the greatest risk was related to the possibility that Bulgaria might fail to complete the process of European integration.” On Wednesday, MPs opened the new plenary session. Bikov stressed the country’s success with the adoption of the euro and highlighted the role of GERB–UDF in this process. According to him, this ensures Bulgaria’s presence within European civilization.

At the beginning of this session, the prospects for the lifespan of the current legislature are too limited to allow for the expression of any legislative or governing strategies, Bikov said.

Already after the formation of the cabinet headed by Rosen Zhelyazkov, the GERB–UDF parliamentary group concluded that the only alternative to this complex governing majority, formed through compromises, is early parliamentary elections, the MP added.

“Without the government of Rosen Zhelyazkov, Bulgaria would not have become a member of the Eurozone, and the challenges facing our country’s civilizational choice would have taken on an existential character,” Bikov said. “Our successful accession would not have happened without the efforts of our leader Boyko Borissov, whose key role in Bulgaria’s development will be assessed first by historians rather than by our opponents,” Bikov added. He also recalled the role of the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), which “over the past 36 years has consistently embodied Bulgaria’s European path.”

The declaration also highlighted the role of GERB–UDF in joining the ERM II mechanism and Schengen. “We are convinced that in the coming years GERB–UDF will continue to play a structurally defining role in Bulgarian political life,” Bikov said.

A message was also addressed to the coalition’s opponents.

“We remind our opponents that over the past 20 years, attempts to destroy GERB have always ended in disaster for those who undertook them,” Bikov said. “This tendency will continue in the future, because our formation is an authentic representative of hundreds of thousands of Bulgarian citizens who cannot be ignored or bypassed,” he stressed. Bikov said that GERB–UDF will continue to respect and abide by the will of Bulgarian citizens, regardless of whether they are in the role of governing party or opposition.

GERB–UDF also called for the avoidance of hate speech and for a tolerant election campaign.
