The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said she would vote in favor of unification with Romania if a referendum were held on the issue. She made the comment in an interview with British journalists Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, who host the popular UK political podcast, The Rest Is Politics, and was quoted in Digi24. This is the first time Maia Sandu has directly expressed her position on the matter, the outlet noted.

"In the late 1980s there were national revival movements, and of course there were discussions about unification with Romania, because Moldova had previously been part of Romania. But there was no way to know how many people would vote for it, because we did not have a referendum. Still, judging by the number of people who took part in the movement and those who went out into the streets - hundreds of thousands - we can say there would have been support for unification with Romania," Maia Sandu said.

She added that nowadays it is becoming increasingly difficult for a country like Moldova to survive and exist as a democracy and a sovereign state.

"As President of the Republic of Moldova, I understand that there is no majority in favor of unification with Romania, but there is a majority that supports accession to the EU, and we are acting in that direction. This is a much more realistic goal and helps us protect our sovereignty,” Sandu explained.

According to her, Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to control Europe, and people still do not fully see how deeply the "Kremlin dictator" interferes in the internal affairs of the European Union.
