A total of 489 snowploughs are operating on Bulgaria’s national road network, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) said in a press release on Thursday. Road sections are treated primarily to prevent icing, the agency said, adding that falling temperatures and the cessation of snowfall are creating conditions conducive to road icing.
Teams from road maintenance companies are taking the necessary actions to ensure traffic flow under winter conditions and to guarantee safe travel for drivers, RIA said, specifying that, in order to enhance road safety and when necessary, certain road sections may be temporarily closed to allow treatment with inert materials. Where required due to strong winds, snowdrifts, or poor visibility, traffic may be temporarily restricted until weather conditions improve and roads are cleared, the Agency explained.
RIA urged drivers to set out with vehicles properly equipped for winter conditions in the coming days as well.
