Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Romania, Radko Vlaykov, highlighted Romania’s crucial role in organizing the April Uprising and supporting Bulgaria’s later liberation. He was speaking at a BTA-organized conference in Ruse Wednesday that commemorates a December 1875 decision by the Giurgiu Revolutionary Committee to launch the 1876 April Uprising in Bulgaria.

The event brought together academics, public officials, diplomats, journalists, and students from Bulgaria and Romania. It is part of a joint initiative of BTA, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT), and Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), called “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” for commemorating anniversaries in Bulgarian history that are significant for European history through to 2032, when 1,400 years will be marked since the establishment in 632 of the first Bulgarian state in Europe - Old Great Bulgaria.

Ambassador Vlaykov notes that the Romanian people provided refuge to many key figures in Bulgarian history. He emphasized the importance of including Romania in commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the uprising.

“Our gratitude to the Romanian people for this support must be very high, as well as for the lives they lost at Pleven, Grivitsa, Vidin, and many other places,” he said.

He described Ruse as Bulgaria’s city with the richest historical memory and cultural significance in Europe and welcomed the start of the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative there. Vlaykov also announced that a bust of revolutionary Stefan Karadja, who lived eight years in the Romanian city of Tulcea, will soon be unveiled there, with the casting coming from Ruse’s central monument.

He praised the efforts of BTA, BNR, and BNT to engage the public in the upcoming 150th-anniversary commemorations.
