Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev represented Bulgaria at the 4th EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum, held in Brussels on Friday, the Ministry said. The forum offers a platform for discussing shared challenges and underscores the EU’s unity and commitment to one of the world’s most dynamic regions, marked by climate and geopolitical pressures, rising military spending, and tensions in the South China Sea and the Korean Peninsula.
Georgiev took part in a discussion focused on security priorities in the context of current geopolitical developments. “To ensure stability in our two regions and address the challenges of a complex security environment, we need a joint approach between the EU and the Indo-Pacific region,” he said. Georgiev also underlined the importance of cybersecurity amid increasing dependence on digital platforms and the risks associated with them.
The Minister highlighted several fields with strong potential for closer cooperation and joint initiatives, including maritime security, countering hybrid threats, space technologies, defence, and related innovations.
The forum brought together around 70 participants from the EU institutions and Member States, Indo-Pacific countries, and regional organisations from across the Indo-Pacific region from the East coast of Africa to the Pacific island states.
