At End of October, Cash in Circulation in Bulgaria Drops by 15.18% Y/Y to 508,983,326 Banknotes - Central Bank

At the end of October, there were 508,983,326 banknotes in circulation in Bulgaria, according to statistics published by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) on its website. This represents a decrease of 15.18% year-on-year (600,062,295 banknotes). 

The largest number of banknotes in circulation continues to be those with a nominal value of BGN 50 – 202,740,954 notes, followed by BGN 100 notes – 126,247,654, and BGN 20 notes – 78,681,824. 

The total value of banknotes in circulation at the end of October was BGN 25,186,424,030. Compared to October 2024, this is a decrease of 15.24% (BGN 29,714,386,115).

At the end of 1999, there were 160,559,571 banknotes in circulation, according to BNB statistics. At that time, the banknote with the highest denomination was BGN 50, with 20,074,488 notes in circulation. The most widely circulated denomination then was BGN 1, with 37,223,418 notes.

Banknotes of BGN 1 have not been in circulation since January 1, 2016, but they can still be exchanged at BNB counters. BGN 2 banknotes were withdrawn from circulation on January 1, 2021, and can also still be exchanged at the central bank’s counters. The BGN 100 banknote has been in circulation since December 8, 2003.
