BTA announces with deep sorrow the passing of its veteran translator and editor Bistra Roushkova — a distinguished translator, editor, and a person of exceptional dedication to language and culture. She passed away on November 5.

Born on July 21, 1959, in Sofia, she spent part of her childhood in India, where her father served as a trade attaché. She graduated in English philology and devoted her professional life to translation, language, and cultural heritage. She worked with the Prof. Ivan Duychev Centre for Slavic and Byzantine Studies with Sofia University, contributing to the documentation of murals and icons, as well as to translations of specialized works in Slavistics, Byzantine studies, medicine, law, and Orthodox theology. Among her most notable achievements is the Bulgarian translation of John Meyendorff’s Byzantine Theology, published in 1995.

She also spent several years working in the English-language department of Sofia Press.

For decades, Bistra Roushkova was part of the BTA team, retiring as Senior Editor in the English-language department. Even after her retirement, she continued to work for BTA — her last project being the English-language edition of BTA's LIK magazine, dedicated to Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Those who worked with her will remember her as a demanding mentor and an exceptional erudite, a kind friend, a bright presence in the newsroom, and a true master of homemade cherry jam and cheese pie.
