Prime Minister Borissov Confers with EC President Juncker, German Chancellor Merkel

Luxembourg/Sofia, May 31 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov conferred with European Commission (EC) President Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel prior to the celebrations of the European People's Party's 40th anniversary, held in Luxembourg on Monday.

Borissov has informed the EC President about the border protection measures taken by the Bulgarian Government and State in connection with the refugee flow, as well as the construction of the fence along the Bulgarian-Turkish border, the Bulgarian Government's press service reported. The two also discussed the situation in the region.

During the talks, Borissov told Juncker about the efficient work organization between the Bulgarian Army and Police forces in relation to the recently detained group of migrants, which were returned to Greece. The EC President congratulated the Bulgarian PM on the timely reaction and one of the fastest readmissions in Europe.

Borissov and Merkel discussed the role of a united Europe for maintaining global peace and stability. "The EU guarantees peace and humanity in times of crises. The Union shows how human rights are observed and basic values upheld," the Bulgarian PM noted. Borissov said that sometimes the decisions to show solidarity with asylum seekers are not the easiest ones to make, but are the right ones because they are in line with protecting human lives. The PM added that the proper way for this to happen is to have common rules and procedures on a European level, which can make this process as painless as possible. According to him, given the ongoing migrant crisis, European states must show solidarity with the most affected countries, like they have done throughout the Community's existence.
