All necessary measures have been taken to comply with the applicable environmental protection legislation, Maritsa Iztok 2 EAD said in a statement to the media on Wednesday in connection with a ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) revoking an emissions derogation granted to the state-owned coal-fired power plant.
Maritsa Iztok 2 TPP continues to carry out its main activity – the production of electricity. Since 2017, Maritsa Iztok 2 EAD has adopted and implemented investment and maintenance programmes aimed at the sustainable modernization of the plant, while consistently pursuing a policy of complying with the requirements for Best Available Techniques, introduced that same year, the plant’s press centre also said.
The SAC ruling came following a series of legal challenges brought by the environmental organizations For the Earth and Greenpeace Bulgaria. Environmental groups welcomed the ruling, describing it as a landmark decision for public health and environmental protection in Bulgaria. According to a post on the Greenpeace Bulgaria website, Maritsa East 2 TPP had been allowed to emit sulfur dioxide at nearly twice the permitted level and mercury at more than four times the legal limit, without a deadline or a concrete plan to reduce harmful emissions.
